Early white spot
Enamel has started to lose minerals but there is no hole yet. Fluoride treatment and better home care can reverse it.
Small cavity
The decay has broken through the enamel. Cleaned out and restored with a tooth-coloured filling in one visit.
Deep decay
Decay has reached the nerve, causing pain. Root canal treatment removes the infection and saves the tooth.
Broken-down tooth
Not enough tooth is left for a filling. A crown rebuilds it — or, if beyond repair, extraction and replacement.
Preventing Cavities
1. Brush twice a day
Two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, especially before bed.
2. Cut down on sugar
It is how often you have sugar, not just how much. Sodas and sweet snacks between meals are the biggest culprits.
3. Clean between teeth
Floss or interdental brushes reach the surfaces where most cavities start.
