It causes severe, throbbing pain, swelling and sometimes fever. It will not go away on its own, and antibiotics alone only calm it temporarily.

Relieve the pressure
The abscess is drained so the pain drops quickly, under local anaesthetic.
Remove the infection source
Root canal treatment cleans the infected nerve and seals the tooth so the infection cannot return.
Extraction when needed
If the tooth is too damaged or cracked to save, removing it clears the infection completely.
Antibiotics and follow-up
Prescribed when the infection has spread or you have fever. A review visit confirms full healing.

2. Do not squeeze the boil
Rinse gently with warm salt water and take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed.
3. Go to hospital if
You have difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling around the eye, or a high fever — then come to us for the tooth.
4. Finish treatment
Antibiotics calm the infection but do not cure it. The tooth still needs root canal treatment or extraction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will antibiotics cure a tooth abscess?
No. Antibiotics reduce the swelling and infection for a while, but the abscess returns unless the infected tooth is treated with a root canal or removed.
Can a dental abscess burst on its own?
Sometimes a gum boil drains by itself and the pain eases, but the infection inside the tooth remains and will flare up again. See a dentist even if the swelling goes down.
Is a dental abscess dangerous?
It can be. Untreated infections can spread to the jaw bone, the neck and, rarely, the bloodstream. Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency.
