Most dental problems do not start with pain. They start with small signs that are easy to ignore for months — until a tooth suddenly hurts and the simple fix has become a bigger one. 1. Your gums bleed when you brush

Healthy gums do not bleed. A little blood on the brush or in the sink is the earliest sign of gum disease. At this stage it is completely reversible with a professional cleaning and better brushing. Left for years, it becomes periodontitis, which destroys the bone around your teeth and is the main reason adults lose teeth.

2. A tooth twinges with cold, sweet or hot

A sharp reaction to cold water, ice cream or sugary food usually means enamel has worn away, a gum has receded, or a cavity has started. Sensitivity that lasts more than a few weeks, or that is getting worse, deserves a checkup — especially if sweet things set it off, which points to decay.

3. Bad breath that mouthwash does not fix

Persistent bad breath almost always comes from the mouth: tartar under the gums, gum disease, a deep cavity or an old crown that traps food. Mints hide it for twenty minutes. A cleaning and a checkup deal with the cause.

4. Pain or a strange feeling when you bite

Pain on biting down — or when you let go — is the classic sign of a cracked tooth. A crack caught early is stabilised with a filling or crown. A crack that spreads to the root means losing the tooth. Food that keeps packing in the same spot is another sign something has changed.

5. It has been more than a year
