Teeth whitening is the most requested cosmetic treatment at M Dental Care — and the one that comes with the most questions. Here are honest answers to the ones we hear every week in Kampala.

Does whitening damage the enamel?

Professional whitening, done at the right concentration and supervised by a dentist, does not damage enamel. The gel — hydrogen or carbamide peroxide — passes through the enamel and breaks down the stain molecules inside the tooth; it does not strip or thin the surface. Decades of research and millions of treatments back this up. Damage happens when people use very strong gels unsupervised, whiten far too often, or use abrasive home remedies like charcoal, lemon juice or baking soda, which do wear enamel away.

Will it hurt?

Some people feel temporary sensitivity to cold during and for a day or two after whitening. It is not a sign of damage — it is the peroxide temporarily irritating the nerve — and it settles on its own. We reduce it by checking for cavities and exposed roots first, protecting your gums with a barrier, and using a desensitising gel afterwards. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell us; we adjust the treatment.

Why not just buy a kit in town?

Three reasons. First, strength: shop products are legally weak, so results are slight and slow. Second, fit: a one-size tray leaks gel onto the gums, which burns them. Third, diagnosis: whitening a tooth with an unnoticed cavity, or gums with disease, causes real pain. A dentist checks all this first. There is also the question of what is actually in unregulated products sold online.

Does whitening work on everyone?

It works best on yellow and brown discolouration from age, tea, coffee, tobacco and food. It works less well on grey teeth and does nothing on crowns, veneers or fillings, which keep their original colour. Deep fluorosis marks and single dark teeth after injury often need a different approach — see our guide to stained and yellow teeth. We will tell you honestly at your consultation which result to expect.

How long does it last?

One to three years, depending on how much tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco you consume. Rinsing with water after staining drinks, brushing twice a day and a six-monthly polish keep the result longer, and a short top-up treatment restores it.

Who should not whiten?

Pregnant and breastfeeding women (as a precaution), children under 16, and anyone with untreated cavities or gum disease — those are fixed first. Everyone else with healthy teeth is a candidate.
